What is a Fancy Colored Diamond? A “Fancy Colored Diamond” is a diamond that typically has a color by nature. Diamonds are not radiant white when they come from the earth. There are diamonds available in a wide variety of colors.

How do diamonds get their color? The color in diamonds is caused by the included gases. For example, the inclusion of the gas “boron” creates a blue diamond. Similarly, diamonds become yellow due to the inclusion of nitrogen.

	In what colors are Fancy Colored Diamonds available? Diamonds come in nearly all colors, with yellow being the most commonly occurring color in nature. The rarest is red. Also popular are blue, pink, and green. It’s not just the color but especially the intensity that determines the popularity and price of colored diamonds. They are categorized from Fancy Deep (very intense color) to Faint (very light). Most colored diamonds come with certificates, for example, from GIA.

What do Fancy Colored Diamonds cost? Are colored diamonds more expensive than white diamonds? This cannot be answered categorically, as it depends on many factors, including color, intensity, cut, and clarity. As a general rule: Brown diamonds are often less expensive than white (colorless) diamonds of comparable quality. Yellow diamonds up to the “Fancy Light” level generally command a similar price to white diamonds.

Are all Fancy Colored Diamonds naturally colored? Naturally occurring colored diamonds are very rare, making them highly sought after. However, there are other ways to obtain colored diamonds. One method involves treating white diamonds. In this process, a white diamond is treated using the HPHT method (High Pressure High Temperature), similar to a high-pressure oven. This process activates the included gases, resulting in a diamond turning blue with Boron gas or yellow with included nitrogen. Additionally, there are Laboratory Grown Diamonds (Lab Grown Diamonds), which are artificial diamonds created in a laboratory. With these, diamonds can be produced in the desired color. The advantage of treated and lab-grown diamonds is that they are priced similarly to white (natural) diamonds.

Colored Diamonds and the 4C’s: Do they still play a role? The 4C’s are the categories used to classify diamond quality. These are: Color Clarity Cut Carat As mentioned above, the determination of color is different for Fancy Colored Diamonds compared to colorless diamonds. However, the other factors remain the same: excellent cut, high clarity, and size (carat weight) are also important.
