George Russell got engaged to his long term partner Carmen Montero Mundt in early August 2026. The proposal took place during the Formula 1 summer break at a romantic dinner on the beach, and the couple announced it on Instagram. The ring is a threestone ring with an oval Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond in the center and two trillion cuts on the sides. We estimate the center diamond at 8 to 10 carat and the ring as a whole at around one million dollars. That makes it, in our view, the most beautiful celebrity engagement ring of the year.
The proposal: candles, flowers and a sunset
The two have been a couple since 2020. They were introduced back then by a mutual friend. During the Formula 1 summer break, Russell asked the question of all questions, and in early August the engagement was made public on Instagram.
The proposal took place at a dinner directly on the beach. The pictures show everything a moment like this needs: a laid table, white flowers, countless candles and a sunset behind it all. The staging was considered, but never overloaded. That is exactly what separates a backdrop from a moment both of them will still remember in thirty years.
The ring in detail
The ring follows a classic construction that has worked for more than a hundred years: three diamonds side by side, one dominant in the center and two smaller ones on the sides. In English this design is called a threestone ring, in German we speak of a trilogy. The meaning is always the same, namely past, present and future.
The oval center diamond
In the center sits an oval diamond in a strong yellow. For a carat weight like this, the oval is a clever choice. It lengthens the finger visually, looks larger than a round brilliant at the same weight and does not sit heavily on the hand despite its length. With oval shapes, the length to width ratio decides whether a diamond looks elegant or stubby. Which shape suits which hand is something we have described in detail in our article on which diamond shape suits you.
Our estimate of the carat weight is 8 to 10 carat. That is a magnitude you rarely hold in your hand in Germany, even in good houses.
The trillion cuts on the sides
Two trillion cuts sit to the left and right. These are trapezoid diamonds with brilliant facets that show considerably more fire than flat step cut trapezoids. They are the colorless counterpart to the yellow oval and guide the eye inward instead of competing for attention themselves.
This combination is the real reason the ring works so well. A Fancy Vivid Yellow of this size could quickly look heavy and showy. The narrow, bright side diamonds give it room to breathe. If unusual cutting shapes interest you, you will find further examples among the diamonds in special shapes.

What Fancy Vivid actually means
Colorless diamonds are graded on a scale from D to Z. The less color, the higher the grade. With colored diamonds this logic is reversed. Here it is not the absence of color that is rewarded, but its intensity. The grades run from Faint through Very Light, Light, Fancy Light, Fancy and Fancy Intense up to Fancy Vivid, Fancy Deep and Fancy Dark.
Fancy Vivid is the grade with the highest color saturation. That is exactly where we place the diamond of Carmen Montero Mundt. In the photographs the yellow looks lively and saturated, neither pale nor pulled toward brown. Between a Fancy Yellow and a Fancy Vivid Yellow of the same carat weight there is often a multiple in price. How colored diamonds are formed and what makes them rare is explained in our article on colored diamonds and fancy colored diamonds.
The details at a glance
| Element | Our estimate | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Threestone ring, that is a trilogy | Frames the center diamond without diminishing it |
| Center diamond | Oval, Fancy Vivid Yellow, around 8 to 10 carat | Color intensity drives the price more strongly than size |
| Side diamonds | Two trillion cuts, trapezoid with brilliant facets | Create contrast and give the oval visual room |
| Value | Around one million dollars | Assumes a natural diamond in this color grade |
| Verifiability | None, no certificate has been made public | Every figure remains an estimate based on photographs |
Why the estimates differ so widely
In the days after the announcement, very different numbers circulated. The range ran from a few hundred thousand euros to more than a million dollars, and on carat weight from around 5 up to 10 carat. That is not a contradiction, but a logical consequence of the situation.
Nobody has held this diamond in their hand. A photograph reveals neither the color grade nor the clarity, neither the proportions nor the origin. With colored diamonds that is decisive, because between a natural Fancy Vivid Yellow and a laboratory grown diamond of the same color lie worlds in price, but not in appearance. What actually separates the two origins is something we have written down in our comparison of lab grown and natural diamonds.
Only one statement is therefore honest: we are estimating. We do so on the basis of more than thirty years of working with diamonds, and we say plainly that it is an estimate.
What you can take from this for your own ring
A ring of this magnitude is a realistic benchmark for very few people. The design decisions behind it very much are.
The trilogy works at any size. The construction of three diamonds looks just as coherent at 0.7 carat in the center as it does at ten. The proportion between center and sides decides the impression, not the absolute weight. You will find further designs in our overview of the ten most beautiful engagement rings.
Color is the alternative to size. If you want impact without investing in carat weight, a colored diamond achieves considerably more than a few extra tenths of weight. A yellow diamond in a medium color grade is a different price range from Fancy Vivid and is still immediately recognizable as a deliberate decision.
Two diamonds tell a different story than three. If the symbolism of the trilogy feels too classic to you, it is worth looking at the Toi et Moi ring, which works with two diamonds of equal standing.
Everyday life has a say. A high set oval diamond looks spectacular in photographs. Whether it still wears well after ten years depends on the setting, on the height of the construction and on how the wedding ring later sits beside it. Anyone who thinks about matching wedding rings early avoids compromises later.
If you would like to try a trilogy in your own proportions, you can put shape, carat weight and alloy together yourself in the configurator and see the price in real time as you go.
Trilogy and color from our own workshop
A trilogy places higher demands on production than a single set diamond. Three diamonds have to sit in one line, at the same height, with even spacing. Any deviation is visible immediately, because the eye reads the row as a whole.
We make these rings in our own goldsmith workshop in Augsburg. The material is forged and densified before the settings are created. A ring that is only cast and then merely polished is indistinguishable at first glance. After a few years of daily wear it is not, because softer prongs wear down faster and the diamonds then have to be reset.
You can see this for yourself in our showroom for engagement rings in Munich or directly at the workshop on Jakober Strasse in Augsburg. We put colored and colorless diamonds side by side on the table for you, so that you can see the difference instead of having to imagine it.

Frequently asked questions
When did George Russell and Carmen Montero Mundt get engaged?
The engagement was announced on Instagram in early August 2026. The proposal itself took place during the Formula 1 summer break.
What does the engagement ring of Carmen Montero Mundt look like?
It is a threestone ring, that is a trilogy. An oval yellow diamond sits in the center, flanked by two trapezoid trillion cuts in white.
How many carat does the yellow diamond have?
We estimate the oval center diamond at 8 to 10 carat. Lower figures are circulating in the media as well. Without a certificate, every number remains an estimate based on photographs.
What does the engagement ring of George Russell cost?
Our estimate is around one million dollars. That number assumes a natural diamond in the color grade Fancy Vivid Yellow. Other assumptions lead to considerably lower values.
What does Fancy Vivid Yellow mean?
Fancy Vivid is the grade with the highest color saturation on the scale for colored diamonds. A Fancy Vivid Yellow shows a rich, lively yellow without brownish or gray components.
What is a trillion cut?
A trillion cut is a diamond cut in a trapezoid or triangular shape with brilliant facets. It shows more fire than flat step cut trapezoids and is frequently used as a side diamond.
Why is the oval so popular for large diamonds?
At the same carat weight, the oval looks larger than a round brilliant and lengthens the finger visually. What decides the effect is the length to width ratio.
Are yellow diamonds rarer than colorless ones?
Colored diamonds in strong saturation are considerably rarer than colorless diamonds in the usual commercial qualities. Rarity increases with the intensity of the color, which is why Fancy Vivid is the most expensive grade.
Can a ring like this be recreated?
Yes. The construction can be realized at any magnitude, from half a carat upward. We make trilogies with colored or colorless diamonds individually in our workshop in Augsburg.
Is a yellow diamond suitable for everyday wear as an engagement ring?
Yes, because the hardness of a diamond is independent of its color. More important for everyday suitability are the setting, the height of the construction and the question of whether the material was forged and densified.
How do I find out which diamond shape suits my hand?
Most reliably by trying on several shapes at the same carat weight side by side. At an appointment in Munich or Augsburg we place oval, cushion and round directly on your hand for comparison.
How long does it take to make an individual trilogy?
For an individually made ring you should allow several weeks, depending on the diamond search and the setting. With colored diamonds the sourcing can take longer, because the selection is considerably smaller.
